bonjour ~

Welcome to the twenties world! I was once told that the twenties are the best years to make an account of precious memories of life, dreams and love–doing so in the most vibrant manner possible.

Korea: Jeju part 1

안녕!

This post will be regarding Jeju!

It has been slightly more than 6 months since I came back from Korea, but I still miss it every now and then especially whenever I was watching dramas/ variety show, as they are showing the beautiful Korea again. Their winter scene and summer is so different yet so familiar to me. (ok, moving on to the Jeju trip)

For Jeju, if you have plenty of time in your hand then you may want to consider taking train then ship (the travelling itself might take about a day?) As we are tight on our schedule we decided that we should just take the domestic flight there. It was very difficult for us to book through Jeju air and many other domestic flights through the internet in the end we had to rely on the travelling agency below our hostel to help us. We book our hostel and air tickets really last minute, like maybe 1 week or max 2 weeks before going to Jeju while we are in Korea?

This time we also managed to book our hostel through the help of Agoda and of course YR’s credit card. (hahas, Agoda is really useful in booking hotel/hostel etc, do remember to read through the reviews before making your decisions.)

We went to Jeju on the Thursday night right after finishing our lesson at 6pm. We wanted to maximise our time at Jeju since we realised that 3 days 2 night at Busan wasn’t enough at all. For domestic flight, we were supposed to go to Gimpo Airport instead of Incheon (which was so far away). We are taking Jeju Air to Jeju but there are many more airlines that go to Jeju as well!

It was quite convenient to get to Gimpo Airport (for all domestic flights and some other international flight?) as there is a direct airport line at Hongik Uni station (just need to transfer line from green to that).

And this time I decided to not bring my luggage instead brought my bag pack after learning my lesson from Busan trip! (Carrying your luggage up and down is no fun even when you think it is light) Thank goodness for the decision because the airplane isn’t directly linked to the airport, bus transfer is needed to be able to board. First time trying that!

We were quite late for our flight check in so the seats were all separated, the procedures were fast and with much lesser hassle compared to taking international flight, and nothing to check in we are now all ready for JEJU!

It was a 1hour plus to 2 hour flight there, so no food just orange juice from Jeju specialty -orange. It is quite sweet; its taste is nicer than the usual orange juice that I tried before? I supposed it is from Jeju orange? The special orange that is famous in Jeju! (Too bad when we were in Jeju it wasn’t the season of harvesting for Jeju orange?, so didn’t have a chance to try it.)

After some slight turbulent as Jeju is so windy~, we finally reached Jeju! Our hostel is quite near the airport with direct bus there and just needed some walking!

We decided to book a car before coming here as one of us have international driving license and of course have to be familiar with left hand drive:( . (But we will only be able to get the car the next morning, since the car is paid for depending on the no. of days borrowed.)

Most importantly is it is difficult to get around the tourist area using bus since the waiting interval is wide, the walking distance from the bus stop to the place is long and there isn’t any subway as well. So being a tourist and you want to maximise your time there you should consider booking a taxi uncle and pay him (plus his meals) to bring you around for a few days, or book a car if you are confident of driving in a foreign land! (Most of the cars come with navigator to help you to drive around Jeju! Jeju has much lesser car, so it is quite safe to drive around as long as you don’t speed:)))

(Do book your car early as we have to pay slightly higher pricing as most of the cars were booked since it was summer period and many Koreans are there for short holidays.)

After some turmoil, we have finally reached our hostel! (Getting down on the wrong bus stop, taking some detour and we were all so famished as it has way past our dinner time)

(Dinner as well)

Washing machine is available in the hostel as well if you are planning to stay for a longer period of time! Breakfast available as well so long as you are willing to cook your own eggs! Hand-drip coffee and orange juice are available as well. Breads/jams/yogurts are all own-made products by the owner! (The strawberry jams were really nice♥♥; too bad they don’t sell individually) but be more wary when you are throwing the rubbish! Need to separate them into food waste and non-recyclable waste (I think there would be fine for the hostel if not done properly? Some of the rooms comes with ipad for you too.

for 1st night only
(For 2nd and 3rd night, since we couldn’t get it for the first night, a very good room if you are going in a big group!)

Finally morning arrives and it was time for adventure and exploration of JEJU! Most of the tourist attraction requires a small amount of payment before you can enter. Ranging from 1000won to 9000 won for most of them!

We did our homework and find out all the address (with postal code) of the tourist attraction that we are interested in with their opening hours and check out the route to see which itinerary would maximise our time there! (This is so important, as you don’t want to miss out anyone of them if possible and minimise petrol usage since you need to top back up to the amount when you receive the car:)) (Before I forget, it is better to wear your sport shoe for walking and bring along your slippers when you are going to the beach! Anyway you got a car/taxi boot to put them, it would be useful:)) (get ready some car sickness drug or plum/lemons etc, whatever method you believe it since not all part of the ride will be smooth and distance from attraction to attraction is fairly far! For me is to keep a relatively empty stomach!)

So off we go to Manjanggul Cave (만장굴)! Recognised as one of the UNESCO World Heritage. This is my first time entering a cave since Singapore doesn’t have one?

It gets darker and darker as you walk in and gets colder and colder as well! The road is not flat since layers and layers of lava have flow though for hundreds of years before it become dormant, bats are still available in the cave so just be a bit careful and all will be fine (just paddle of water here and there on the ground)!

the whole route is about 1-2 hours? Tried and tested once is enough for me since it was more of a trip of feeling than sight, cause it is just too dark inside. (insert google pic with light inside)

(mandu for lunch since I don’t wish to get carsick)

Exact Location:
Gimnyeong-ri, Gujwaeup, Jeju City (East of Jeju)

Next attraction of the day: Hallasan!

Hallasan National Park (한라산국립공원) is the designated park for Hallasan. Hallasan is the highest mountain in South Korea. Many routes are available for you to choose but we took the shortest one up (due to time constraints), which also means the steepest way up. (Choose the longer route up if time permits as it will bring you to a prettier mountain top view!:)) I thought I was going to die before reaching the top, while walking up the mountain with the height of 1,169m.

There are five hiking trails on Hallasan. They are:

• Gwaneumsa Trail (관음사) - 8.7 km

• Eorimok Trail (어리목) - 4.7 km

• Seongpanak Trail (성판악) - 9.6 km

• Yeongsil Trail (영실) - 3.7 km

• Donnaeko Trail (돈내코) - 9.1 km

If I am not wrong I think the trail that we went should be … cause the others required at least half day to almost one day to complete the to and fro from the top of the mountain, but you do have some give and take, since the longest trail- … trail allows you to have the best view of the whole Hallasan, I think the view would be so magnificent that all your tiredness just vanished. (Mine was decent for a country pumpkin like me since I have only been to 2-3 mountains in China and Singapore. And it was really very windy!)

But do be prepared, no matter which trail you have chosen there are definitely times that you felt like giving up, because it is really tiring and very strenuous to your legs, that once you stopped to rest you can feel that your legs are shaking from all the walking.

So after walking for I don’t know how long we finally reached the top of the mountain, didn’t take any photo along the way cause all of us just wanted to save the energy to reach the top of the mountain. This trail is quite shady so it did somehow help us, (remember to give some light snacks and water! To replenish yourself along the way or better still while you are enjoying the scenery at the top of the trail! ☺)

(Will definitely go back again for the trail and this time I want to take the trail that leads to the top of the mountain with the prettiest view! But before that please do some exercise to prevent yourself from dying before reaching the top. hahas)

Next is mystery road and Loveland!

Mystery road is a stretch of road that would allow the car to move when it is in neutral gear even though it looks straight, flat, and nothing different from the other road special huh?

So Loveland was just 100m ? away from mystery road (I heard that there wasn’t much inside Loveland, and it is around 9,000 won? wasn’t so interested in the status inside that are related to men and women) , so while all of them went in, I went back to mystery road to try it out myself in the car and it really moved! I just drove for a short distance cause just too many cars waiting for it and I am quite scare to drive using the left hand side. Went to walk around the mystery road area after the drive, aren’t some of these status better than what is inside Loveland (what is the point of going in if you are too shy to show those pic in the end? Hahas)

Exact address of mysterious road:
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Jeju-si Nohyeong-dong 289-15
제주특별자치도 제주시 1100로 2894-63 (노형동)

Had Seolleongtang for dinner at a restaurant near our hostel, actually there were a lot of bars and BBQ restaurants that operate late into the night but we are going to have an early night (12 am when we finished, lol, not so early huh?) In preparation for the next day for sunrise at …, which we need to wake up at 3.30am to reach there in time for the sunrise.

Decided to split Jeju trip into 2 posts because this post is getting way too long, after finish typing the whole trip.

Till I am back again!
